The good news: Democrats are taking Donald Trump’s threats to subvert the midterms as seriously as they took the gerrymandering arms race. They’re planning, they’re war-gaming.
The bad news: it’s ominous that they believe the federal government represents a genuine threat to free and fair elections, yet their approach remains mostly reactive. They’re anticipating various Republican hijinks and planning responses to them, rather than taking proactive steps to discourage GOP election rigging.
Josh Kovensky and Hunter Walker wrote an important piece for TPM last week about the state-of-play in Democratic preparations to protect the midterms. They joined me for an hour-long discussion of how credible the planning is, and what the game plan looks like as best we can tell.
