SCOTUS flipping this election would not just be a naked coup; it would be firing on Fort Sumter. Game on. Or game over. Maybe THAT would be enough to finally wake people up to the fact that this unholy confederation has been held together by spit and shine wax from the beginning and needs to be finally put out of our misery. There is no winning in our current configuration--only deck chair rearranging.

I think the Virginia Supreme Court overturn is rehearsal for SCOTUS to do it in the midterms. They are nakedly ruthless and DGAF like tRump so it’s not a stretch. I’m seething here watching the Dem establishment eating themselves up over trying to kill the campaigns of Progressive candidates. They are not even looking out in front of them in the clown car they are driving.

They still wouldn't cancel amazon. Something is seriously wrong in this country. I have been in third world countries where average citizens with way less education, if any, are still far more astute and understand a lot about politics.

I'm more cynical than you. I think mobilization by Democrats would spark counter-mobilization by Republicans, a game Democrats would certainly lose.

Just imagine if any midterm election result is overturned, the Dems will just tell us all, “We just got vote a little harder next time in 2028”.

I wished I didn’t feel so cynical about the Dem party but they’ve been batting a thousand on turning the other cheek, when they go low, etc…. because they are feckless smooth groins.

Right there with you. I have envied the republicans for decades.

Trump is already screaming fraud in the CA primary elections, it’s just going to get louder (& again normalized) over the next few months until they (the GOP & his cabinet) figure out a way for either elections to be put on hold by the regime or rigged to the point Dems can’t win a majority.

Republican states are already working overtime to purge Dem voter rolls, establish voter intimidation squads in Dem voting locations, making mail in much more difficult, just to name a few tactics already under way.

If the Dem Party doesn’t start fighting back against this now, thinking they’ll have the law on their side they’re going to lose.

What I notice is dems are not working overtime to register voters, get people to polls, or connect with groups that have elluded them. Republicans have been kicking our ass in those areas, as well as media, for decades. At least in CA it is just more of the same, and what I see tangentially across the US it appears similar.

That the entire Democratic Party isn’t busting their asses to reach and engage with young voters everywhere is not only insane it’s self defeating.

There are millions of new and/or non voting 18-25 year olds who are just waiting for someone to listen to them about what they want their lives and futures to look like and a big percentage of them hate Republican policies.

Everything depends on voters who take the time to sort out what is truly the most important reason to vote: Its not just removing MAGA from power but understanding where to go from that accomplishment. The Dems are failing to answer that question. There is much doubt the current situation will improve.

Tendentious? Accurate.

had to look that one up in the google dictionary

No doubt you are correct. I expect Dems to win the House and probably Senate, but Trump and his minions do whatever they can to stop them from being seated. Book it. Pitchforks next.

beckya57's avatar

Yes, this is entirely possible (though I think OH is more likely to flip than TX). Hope Dems are prepared.

Some rather arcane questions if anyone can answer them.

Could a Dem controlled Senate (I assume this means not counting on Fetterman) simply refuse to seat Paxton without seating Taliricho? Not just during any disputed election litigation but after Paxton might be wrongly declared the winner by the Sec. of State and the courts. How might that work? Can it be done with a simple majority.

Could VP Vance swear in Paxton anyway? And if he did, could the Dems do anything about it?

Given Brian's suggestion that the courts might not be as reliable as they were in 2020 election disputes, it seems these are the types of contingencies Dem lawyers and Dem leadership ought to be prepared to deal with.

I too share your concerns for America’s future and the preservation of democracy! I think we all just can’t conceive of a reality where your scenario will happen.

For myself I vacillate back and forth. I wonder how similar it was in pre Nazi Germany.

There are things we can start doing now if we united in common cause. The question is who is willing to take the time to act now?

Why are we giving up Maine? In no way do I expect Democrats to reverse even half of this even if they hold all 3 for the next 12 years. It will be more of the same. There are not enough progressives to get the other democrats to do anything. They didn't bother to fix anything available during the last 4 years.

Brian Beutler's avatar

Oh I’m definitely not! There are several different scenarios in which Dems win four net seats, including Maine. I wrote the hypothetical this way to refer to breaking news and because I enjoyed the poetic license.
