Let me stipulate up top that I know this isn’t within Democrats’ formal powers. They’re the minority in the House of Representatives. They’ve never been able to force or persuade Republicans to honor their oaths of office, and whatever sway they may have once had over GOP colleagues is at a nadir.
But they can draft, introduce, and force votes, on impeachment resolutions.
And they should start that process today, Tuesday January 21, 2025, in response to President Trump’s decision to pardon over 1,500 insurrectionist, including those who assaulted police officers, on January 6, 2021.
NEG YOUR PARDON
The point isn’t to evict Trump from office. It isn’t even really to “put Republicans on the record” affirming clemency for violent rioters and seditionists—there may be a handful of House Republicans who still fear votes like that, but their party is now well defined by January 6 apologetics and complicity with insurrection.
No, the real point is more earnest and straightforward.
