Biden Owes The Country More Than One YOLO Power Play
If he pardoned Hunter to save him from real danger, he should break more norms to protect Donald Trump's other enemies—and the country.
Before the election, I wrote a few articles encouraging Democrats—particularly President Biden, his senior officials, and Senate Democratic committee chairmen—to do everything in their legitimate power to surface new, damning information about Donald Trump.
This is what people who say “leave it all on the field” means in practice. You’ll sleep better if you dwelling on all the effort you held back. Imagine waking up on November 6 and learning that Trump had been elected to a second term—how will you feel, knowing that there was more you could’ve done, but chose not to? “Who, knowing they could have done more to alert the public, would feel the most remorse? Who would answer to the public for allowing the details of these scandals to fall back into his possession, likely to be destroyed or buried for all time?”
We don’t know what these Democrats chose to leave buried. But the Hunter Biden saga, culminating in his Sunday pardon, and his father’s accompanying statement justifying the decision, all suggest the party still fails to grasp the importance of sunlight, accountability, and clear communication. The election is over and they lost, but now the question is whether they will cede all power to the GOP in six weeks without doing everything they still can to inform and protect the country.
