It’s nice to finally see Trump and the GOP back on their heels, day in, day out for days on end. Kamala Harris’s blitz, now going on two weeks, really seems aimed at proving what she likes to say about unburdening. With the burden of a hobbled candidate lifted, along with the burden of having to explain away or justify his limitations, Harris has been able to run a normal campaign, and the results mostly speak for themselves.
I say mostly because we don’t yet know where things will level out. Harris is obviously in the midst of a surge, but we know she can’t rise in the polls forever, and we have a pretty decent handle on Trump’s floor. So we should expect the race to reach a new equilibrium, and it obviously matters whether it settles with her in a small lead or a substantial one. So for now I’d say take no heed of people who’ve used day-by-day snapshots of the race as a basis for opining (with the same opinions as always) on what Harris needs to do to grow a lead. She seems to be growing one! We just don’t know how big yet. It’s a bit reminiscent of the optimist who falls off a skyscraper and keeps telling himself “so far, so good.” Except, er, the opposite.
Anyhow, here’s a brief rundown for the comment thread or this afternoon’s member chat.
