I was tempted to move this thread and subscriber chat to tomorrow, after President Biden’s (valedictory?*) press conference this evening. But whatever—if things get weird, we can always reconvene.
Presumably you do not need a detailed recap of the past week’s news as pertains to Biden. And presumably that’s what most folks are gonna want to discuss this afternoon. But for the rest, here are a few off-the-beat discussion points.
People can’t stop talking about Project 2025, and Republicans know it’s a big problem.
They even introduced an ersatz “platform” that’s essentially just a bunch of incoherent Trump Truth Social posts strung together.
AOC has introduced articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
Sens. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)—but not Dick Durbin (D-IL)—have asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate Thomas.
As I anticipated, here and elsewhere, House Republicans have launched an investigation of whether Biden’s senior aides have been concealing information about his health while usurping presidential power. There’s no reason to believe Republicans are on to any real scandal (though we obviously can’t say for certain) but we can at least thank them for reminding congressional Democrats that members of Congress have real agenda-setting power.
A hurricane hit Texas, and the state’s degenerate GOP governor Greg Abbott skipped town in advance.
I’ll be participating in this Netroots Nation panel on politics and the Supreme Court tomorrow.
Anything else been gnawing at you? Happy to discuss in comments and during this afternoon’s member live chat at 2 p.m.
