Good morning readers.
Hit me up in the comments section with any questions you have about the news or the handful of non-news things we sometimes rap about. I’ll send members an invitation to join the live chat this afternoon, if you prefer that speed.
Until then, I’ve got a few stories and broad topics in mind.
FBI Director Chris Wray choosing to resign rather than make Donald Trump fire him. (Augurs poorly!)
Related: “Watchdog faults DOJ in Trump’s first term for secretly obtaining records of lawmakers and journalists.”
Luigi Mangiano (but really more like the sources of iniquity in our health-care system).
This obnoxious … can we call it a tweet?… from New York Times reporter Eric Lipton. There’s an obvious media angle here, but it also underscores one of the observations I’ve been kicking around recently: If the public at large understood what’s uncontested among political elites, Democrats would do way better in elections. Here’s a situation where everybody who works in politics (even the last remaining honest Republicans) knows that Trump’s transition has been as scandalous and shambolic as the first one. But most people don’t know. And I don’t blame the Times so much as the leadership of the opposition party, which decided it was all some big distraction.
In the race for DNC chair, I like what Ken Martin said here, and what Friend Of The Blog Ben Wikler said here (watch the whole thing if you can).
See you all this afternoon.
UPDATE: How about a quick chat?
